Welcome to the FCS Lower School

A Private Elementary School in Fredericksburg, VA

We are pleased to offer grades Pre-K3 through 5th grade at our private elementary school in Fredericksburg, VA. Extended Care is also available beginning at 6:30 a.m. and after school until 6:00 p.m.

Young minds and spirits blossom at the FCS Lower School. Our staff is dedicated to the spiritual, academic, and social development of all our students, and we are grateful for the opportunity to minister to them at this important developmental stage. Our curriculum provides a strong foundation in Bible, phonics, reading, math, language, spelling, handwriting, science, and history. Biblical truths are emphasized throughout our curriculum, and prayer time is an important part of each day. Our academic program is complemented by classes in physical education, music, library, art, and computer. Chapel will be held most Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. (grades 2 -5) and Fridays at 8:45am (prek3-1st grade).  For detailed information regarding grade-specific curriculum, please click here.

Regional Creative Writing Winners
4/29/2015

Congratulations to Madeline L. and Rachel H. whose pieces were sent on to the ACSI Regional Creative Writing Festival held in Atlanta, GA. As a result of this competition, they each have received another ribbon. Rachel received an excellent ribbon for her poem, " Winter in Alaska," and Madeline received a superior ribbon for her short story, "Ambercane." Madeline's short story will be published in an ACSI booklet which includes a collection of all superior pieces from the ACSI Southeast Region. We will be presenting these ribbons in chapel on Wednesday, May 6. Parents, we hope you will be able to attend. Way to go, Creative Writers!!

Congratulations to our 4th and 5th graders who submitted pieces to be entered in the ACSI District Creative Writing Festival which was held in March. Several selections were sent for judging along with others from ACSI schools in the area. The superior pieces will go on for judging at the ACSI Regional level.

iPad Parent Information Session

Parents, we are excited to share information with you about our iEXCEL iPad program. If you are the parent of a preschool-4th grade student who would like to learn more about our elementary iPad program or the parent of a current 5th grade student who would like to learn what to expect next year at the Upper School, come to one of our iPad Parent Information Sessions. We are offering 4 sessions – 2 at the Lower School and 2 at the Stafford campus, which will include a short overview followed by a time for questions and comments. We hope to see you there!

Visual Arts Festival

Everyone is getting excited about our upcoming VISUAL ARTS FESTIVAL!  Students in all the art classes are diligently working on their special masterpieces.  The VISUAL ARTS FESTIVAL is open to ALL students at FCS in Kindergarten through 12th grade.  Each student will be able to submit 1-2 pieces of art work completed in art class. Art work may be PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS, PRINT MAKING, MIXED MEDIA, PHOTOGRAPHY, OR 3-D SCULPTURE.

All works of art will be judged, and there will be First Place, Second Place, Third Place, and Honorable Mention ribbons awarded.  If there is any piece of art work that is exceptional, a Best of Show ribbon will be awarded (only one) per grade level at each campus.

 The works of art on display are always a special highlight during April and May.   We invite you to visit each of our campuses and enjoy the wonderful collection of masterpieces on display beginning April 20th at the Lower Campus, Upper Campus-MS, Stafford Campus and ending May 8th at the Upper Campus-HS.


Message from our Principal

Dear Parents,

Many times there are exciting activities going on at the Upper School that our elementary parents do not hear about.  Starting March 29, 4 groups of high school students and adults will be going on mission trips.   One group will be going to Guatemala, one to Haiti and two groups will be going to West Virginia.  We wanted you to know about these missions endeavors so that you can look forward to your students participating when they attend our Upper School.  We ask you to pray for our students who are spending their spring break ministering to others.  Please pray for their safety and their ability to accomplish all God has in store for them.   As you celebrate our Savior’s resurrection with your family, may you be encouraged that ministry is occurring throughout FCS.

Re-Enrollment 2015-2016
1/16/2015

Online re-enrollment for the 2015-2016 school year began Monday, January 5, 2015. We look forward to having your child(ren) continue their educational and spiritual growth at Fredericksburg Christian School for another year!

Please do the following:

• Go to the FCS website at www.fredericksburgchristian.com/online_application

• Log in using your NetClassroom User ID and Password

• Go to Admissions > Apply

• Click on Start next to Online Re-Enrollment

• Click on Reenroll next to the name of the student you will be re-enrolling and begin the re-enrollment process

You will need to complete this process for each student who will be re-enrolling for 2015-2016. However, once you are logged in, many of the fields will be pre-populated with your information. Please read the instructions for each section on the form before making changes.

Current Student Deposit: ($75 per current student will be credited toward student’s 2015-2016 tuition)

• $75 per child through 1/31/2015

• $175 per child after 1/31/2015

Important Message from Our Principal

Parents,

After Monday’s delayed opening, we became aware that some of you did not receive a Honeywell Alert. If you did not receive notification, please check your Honeywell Account to make sure you are in the system and that your information is correct. If there is a problem, please contact the Lower School Office.

 Also, if you did not receive a Honeywell notification, and are wondering if there is an error in the system, you may go to the school’s website (fredericksburgchristian.com) or go to www.fredericksburg.com for updates on delayed openings and school closings.

 If we have a delayed opening, we will not have chapel that day. If your child was scheduled to sing or receive an award, the teachers will contact you about a new date for that.

Is Your Honeywell Profile Updated?

The Honeywell Instant Alert System has been updated for the 14-15 school year!

The Honeywell Instant Alert System is used to notify families in the event of an unscheduled early dismissal, delay, or closing. Occasionally, the system will also be used to relay other important school announcements. Since Honeywell is the primary means used to convey important school information, it is vital for all school families to register with the system and keep their profiles up-to-date.

You may access the Honeywell site here. There is also a link on your login page on the FCS website.

All new families must register on the Honeywell site. To register, click “Parent” under the “New User? Sign Up Now!” heading. Select Virginia/Fredericksburg Christian and enter your child’s name and date of birth. Finally, enter your name and set up your user-name and password. You will then be able to customize your contact information and manage the types of alerts you wish to receive.

All returning families are asked to review their profiles at least once a year to ensure their information is up-to-date. This is especially important if you have moved, changed jobs, changed email addresses, or obtained a new cell phone since you last checked your account. Parents are responsible for maintaining their Honeywell account, so please be sure to update your profile if your contact information changes. Returning families will use their ID and password from last year.

When there is uncertainty as to whether it will be necessary to dismiss early due to weather, please be aware that campus offices are not notified in advance of the Honeywell alert. The best way for you to ensure you receive the very latest information is to maintain your Honeywell profile.Thank you for your assistance with this vital communication tool.

Important Message from the School Nurse
12/2/2014

We would like to remind all parents of our school policy regarding sick children and attendance at school. We require that you keep your children at home if they have a fever of 100 degrees or higher or if they have any signs and symptoms of a contagious nature: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.  Also, we ask that if you are called to pick up a sick child that you make every attempt to do so within 1 hour. If you work in the District or elsewhere, and will not be able to arrive within 1 hour, please make arrangements for your child to be picked up by an emergency contact. After an illness, we require that you keep your child at home until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of medication and have had no vomiting for 24 hours. This is for the protection of teachers and other students and also to give your student time to “get over” the illness. Most students are not ready to return to school the next day after gastrointestinal illnesses and high fevers. Also, many can still be contagious. So please be considerate, not only of your child, but the other children and teachers as well. If you have any questions about your child’s symptoms and if they should attend school for the day, please call and ask one of our school nurses before sending them to school.  Valarie Woods RN,   Natalie Ryan RN      540.373.5357.

Our elementary class websites are up and running.  This is the best way to stay in informed about what is happening in your child's classrooom.  If you haven't logged in and checked out the Google Sites web page, please do so. The Google Sites will be your main source for weekly assignments, tests, class activities, and pictures. Our students will also be using this account at school;  we ask that you do not change this password. 

If you are not able to log on or have any issues with accessing the site, please contact your child’s teacher. They will put you in touch with the right person to help solve the issue that you are having.

Change in Date for Standardized Testing from Mr. Yost

Testing is now scheduled for the the week of April 20th, due to additional information from the testing company.  As we shared with you earlier, FCS has decided to switch from the Stanford standardized achievement tests to TerraNova for our school-wide standardized testing. TerraNova is widely recognized throughout the nation as a respected, valid, and innovative national achievement test. It is also recommended by ACSI, our accreditation agency, and they have worked in partnership with each other to ensure that the test represents who we are as Christian schools. After reviewing the testing materials we received, we felt our students would be much better served by taking the test later in the year. We followed up our conclusions with several calls, contacting both ASCI and CTB/McGraw-Hill, the company that produces the testing. They confirmed what we believed, that this particular standardized test is better suited for later in the school year to assess what students have learned during the year, even though some schools do administer the test in the fall. As a result, we have decided to move our testing to Spring. We are confident this will reflect a more valid score for students and allow us to better use the results to constantly monitor our progress as a school.  Thank you for your flexibility and patience as we seek to use every available means to ensure the success of your child.

 

Chairs Needed
10/13/2014

The conference room at the Upper School is in need of new conference room chairs (similar to the ones currently in the room; see picture below). The room sees quite a bit of traffic for things such as board and administrator meetings, parent meetings, club meetings, and department head meetings, to name a few. This past week it was used by the company conducting our annual financial audit.

If your company or agency happens to be remodeling and has some "like new" conference room chairs that we could have or purchase at a reasonable price, please let your campus principal or secretary know.

Because of the variety of people who use this room, we would prefer adjustable chairs that are dark in color (something that will complement our cherry/mahogany colored conference table). Thanks so much for your help!

After School Care Early Dismissal

Important information:

Only those students who regularly stay from 3:00 to 6:00 will have care from dismissal until 6:00.

Other early dismissal days that care will be provided for those students who are already registered are:  10/10  and  11/7.

 No care will be provided on 12/19 as that is the beginning of the Christmas Holiday for all students and staff.

Principal's Post

Cell Phones: Please continue to show consideration for the safety of our staff and students during dismissal by not being on your cell phones.  I have asked since the beginning of the year for parents to observe this rule, but some continue to ignore our instruction.  When someone is on his/her cell phone, full attention cannot be on the traffic situation.  We are attempting to do our best to keep the traffic flowing smoothly and keep everyone safe.  Please show your respect for what we are doing and help us!

A Message From Our Superintendent

In addition to the high priorities of academic development and spiritual growth at FCS, we are constantly vigilant regarding the safety and security of your children. We continue to improve our security monitoring and emergency response standards, and we are always eager to hear any concerns or suggestions from our school families. I'm writing today just to remind you of some of the procedures we have in place in the event of an emergency at or around your child's campus.

In the event of a lockdown, evacuation, extreme weather, a regional event or emergency, or other unusual activity on or around a campus, we will notify our school families as soon as possible and practical. Our primary methods of notification are Honeywell alerts, email, the FCS website, Facebook, and Twitter.

Parents are certainly welcome to pick up their students (or give permission for student drivers to leave) whenever they feel safety dictates. In the unlikely event that circumstances prevent parents from picking up their children (e.g. an incident near your location or restrictions put in place by local authorities), please know that we will keep your child safely at school with teachers and administrators for as long as it takes for you to get to the campus (even if it means late into the night).

We praise God for His provision of 35 years of safety on all of our campuses, but we recognize the need to be wise and proactive as we consider the times in which we live and as we consider the great privilege we have in caring for your precious children. Thank you for allowing us to help you train and protect your children, and as always, please do not hesitate to contact me or your campus principal if you have any questions or suggestions.

Dismissal Reminders
9/8/2014

Thank you so much to those of you who are following all of the dismissal procedures.  You are making it possible for us to keep the students safe and the traffic line moving quickly.

Please take a moment to read the reminders below...some things are new this year and some we just need to put into practice.

  • Dismissal ends at 3:30 this year.  Teachers assume additional duties at 3:30.  We have extended grace the first few weeks to ensure that our dismissal was running smoothly.  Starting Monday, September 8, 2014, parents who arrive after 3:30 will be asked to sign a late log.  If this becomes a pattern, your child will be taken to after-school care, the business office will be notified, and you will be charged.
  • Pick-up line is absolutely a cell-phone free zone.  This is not a suggestion; it is a law for the safety of the students and the staff.
  • Please display the car sign you were given by hanging it with a small pants hanger from your rearview mirror.  The sign needs to be visible to every staff member.  If you are in need of additional signs, please call the office at 373-5357.
Lands End School Uniforms

It's not too early to start shopping for the coming school year. To order wardrobe items from Lands' End, please visit www.landsend.com/school. Our Preferred School ID is 900071887.

Don't forget: subsitutions are permitted for many of our wardrobe items, such as white and navy polo shirts (long-sleeve or short sleeve) and khaki and navy pants and slacks. Substitutions must be plain and have no logos. Target, Old Navy, Wal-Mart, and Kohl's are just a few examples of local retailers that carry uniform-style clothing, and many run sales as the school shopping season heats up. Sears also carries a limited selection of items from Lands' End.

Celebrate With Books 2013

Help our school library grow as you celebrate special events with your child: birthdays, sports championships, first lost tooth, hard work and determination, great report card. . . anything worth celebrating! 

You can encourage your child to enjoy reading by participating in this program while adding exciting new books to our library for all of our students and teachers to read.  It’s also a great way to honor your child’s teachers as well!

The First through Fifth Grade Chapels which Mrs. Skinner will present books is April 30.

Did you know that school families have access to an online student directory through our website? The directory is not available to the public, so you must log in to the website to search for students.

After logging in, click the "Student Directory" tab located on the left sidebar. You may search by student name, homeroom teacher, or grade (please note: all grades at the Stafford campus are preceded with an "S"). After entering your search criteria, click the "Search" button. Once you receive your search results, click the student's name to see contact information for that student.

Please be aware that some families have indicated that they would like their information kept private (either all contact info or just their phone number). In those cases, contact information will not be displayed.

Clothes Closet Guidelines

FCLS CLOTHES CLOSET GUIDELINES

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CLOTHES CLOSET IS FOR CURRENT FCS FAMILIES ONLY

1.  Please make sure all items placed in the FCS Clothes Closet are in ready to wear condition and meet all of the FCS Wardrobe Guidelines.    Please note that clothing items not meeting the criteria shown below will be returned.

  • Lands'End or Sue Mills clothing only (no substitution items)
  • Clean and ready to wear condition
  • No stains, holes or tears in clothing
  • In good condition - not overly worn or faded

2.  Please attach an envelope (with a safety pin) to the front of the item with the following information on it.

  • Parent's name (Student's name) and telephone number
  • Student's teacher/grade
  • Size of clothing
  • Price (if you are donating the item, please indicate)
  • Cash Only – please write this on the envelope
