Welcome to the FCS Upper School
A Private Middle & High School in Fredericksburg, VA

The approximately 400 students in 6th through 12th grades at our private middle and high school in Fredericksburg, Virginia, are offered a diverse and challenging college-preparatory academic program that prepares them to continue their educations which 95% of our graduating students do.

One of our primary missions is to raise up young Christian men and women as leaders using Biblical principles in every area of our school; and our staff and faculty are committed to encouraging students' spiritual growth and academic achievement. We offer a full complement of sports programs including football, soccer, field hockey, basketball and swimming as well as activities such as art, drama, band, worship teams, orchestra, and missions teams. Also available to our students are our Leadership Institute program, student government, and several service clubs. Each week we have middle school and high school chapels when students and staff stop and focus on the Lord. Student-led music starts our chapels which feature a guest speaker.

We are confident that our students leave FCS not only with a sound education but also a solid understanding of our Lord Jesus Christ.

If you are not yet part of the Fredericksburg Christian School family but would like to learn more about us, please contact our Admissions Office at (540) 735-1286 or click here to RSVP for one of our Open Houses. Student Schedules Are Ready!

All Upper School families should have received an email Friday afternoon with information regarding student schedules. If you did not receive the email, be sure to check your "Spam" or "Junk" folders.

If you would like to request a schedule change for your student, you must complete and submit a Schedule Change Request Form (attached to the email) to Dean Roper no later than August 14.

Meet the Teacher Open House

On Monday, August 17, we will host an optional Meet the Teachers Open House from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Feel free to stop by during those hours to meet your teachers for the 2015-2016 school year.

Upper School Orientation

Tuesday, August 18 is Orientation Day. Orientation for high school students will be held from 8:00-10:00 a.m., and students will rotate through their classes. Orientation for middle school students will be conducted in their homeroom classes from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Parents will gather in the Auxiliary Gym for an assembly during both sessions. Several information tables will also be set up in the Auxiliary Gym for your convenience. You may purchase books, PE uniforms, and reserve student parking spaces. A representative from our Technology Department will be onhand to collect signature forms (required before students are issued iPads). Athletics, Transportation, and Development will also staff information tables and there will be a Volunteer Signup table.

Orientation Day is the official start of the school year and is an attendance day. Students are dismissed at the conclusion of their orientation session, and the first full day of school is Wednesday, August 19. School wardrobe is required beginning Orientation Day.

We look forward to seeing you there!

High School Retreat

The annual high school retreat at Rockbridge Alum Springs is one of the highlights of the FCS high school experience. The retreat includes all of our high school students and most of our faculty members and is a great opportunity to forge and renew friendships, have fun, and set the spiritual tone for the school year.

This year's retreat is scheduled for August 25-27. On or before Orientation Day, all high school families will receive an information package that includes a packing list and an important form required by the retreat center. Students must return their completed consent form and handbook signature page no later than Friday, August 21 in order to go on the retreat.

If your student has dietary restrictions (vegetarian, gluten free, nut free, etc.), you must notify Mrs. Shinkle by Friday, August 21.

Students who are certified lifeguards and interested in working a few hours during the retreat should contact the office as soon as possible. Lifeguard positions pay $10.00/hour.

As always, we are in need of parent volunteers to make this event a success. If you are willing to assist with the retreat, please email Mrs. Tracey Goodnough as soon as possible.

If your student is not going on the retreat, please contact Mr. Williams immediately.

Summer Reading Assignments

Summer reading assignments for the 2015-2016 school year have been posted on our Downloads page (under Upper School). Please be sure to download the assignment for the correct grade and course (Advanced, College Prep, Regular, AP, Dual Enrollment, etc.).

Be Sure to Check Your MySchoolAccount Balance

Lunch will be available for purchase beginning Wednesday, August 19. Please log in to My School Account to check your student's balance, and deposit (or transfer) funds if desired. Just a reminder: all lunch orders must be processed through the myschoolaccount system. Cash/checks cannot be accepted in the lunch line.

Reserve Your Parking Space for 2015-2016

Reservations are now being accepted for student parking spaces for the 2015-2016 school year. A vehicle registration form and payment of $20.00 must be turned in before a space is reserved. Reservations are accepted on a first come, first served basis.

PE Uniforms

PE uniforms are required for all Upper School students enrolled in PE. Uniforms will be available for pickup/purchase on Orientation Day. If you have not yet completed and submitted an order form, please bring a completed form and payment to orientation. Please place an order even if your student will not have PE until 2nd Quarter.

Please be aware that the uniforms tend to run a bit small, so you may want to order a size up to allow for growth. Forms are available here.

TDaP Vaccination Required for All Rising 6th Graders

All students entering 6th grade must provide documentation of a TDaP vaccination before the first full day of school (August 19). This is a state-required immunization and necessary for attendance on August 19. Documentation may be dropped off in the Upper School office (M-Th from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. to noon on Friday) or brought to orientation on August 18. Please contact Mrs. Shinkle or call the office at 540-371-3852 if you have any questions.

An Important Reminder Regarding Student Medications

Just a reminder that all medication must be administered through the clinic. In order to dispense medication to a student, we must have a Medication Permission form (signed by a parent and a physician) on file. Students are not permitted to self-administer medication.

Lands' End Wardrobe Info

To order wardrobe items from Lands' End, please visit Our Preferred School ID is 900071887.

An Important Reminder From the Nurse's Office

While it can be a challenge to decide whether to keep you children home from school when they aren't feeling well, school policy requires they stay home if they:

  • have a fever of 100 degrees or higher
  • have been vomiting or had diarrhea

Please also keep in mind the 24 Hour Rules:

  • Students must be fever free without the aid of medication for at least 24 hours before returning to school.
  • Students must be kept home for at least 24 hours after the last occurrence of vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Students must be kept home at least 24 hours after the first dose of an antibiotic for an infection (e.g. strep throat).

We also recommend students stay home if they are coughing or sneezing often to avoid spreading the illness to others. Thanks so much for your cooperation. Please do not hesitate to contact me (540-371-3852) if you have any questions.

Paula Shinkle RN

Easy Ways to Support FCS

Here are some easy things you can do to benefit FCS while shopping for items you already plan to buy. Encourage family and friends to participate as well.

Amazon Smile:  A simple, automatic way to support FCS. Visit our website homepage for the link in yellow. Designate Fredericksburg Christian Educational Services to ensure that FCS will receive 5% of your purchase price. Businesses can use this, too!

Target Code # 23827: The Take Charge of Education program is available to shoppers who have Target Red Cards. Credit and debit cards are available. Red Card members save 5% on every purchase! When you designate FCS with code 23827, Target will donate 1% of purchases. You only have to register once. We earned over $2,000 last year!

Giant A+ School Rewards (Code # 02317): This program allows you to earn points each time you shop. Register your Giant Bonus Card at the store or at New this year: you do not need to register your card if previously registered. FCS earned almost $600 last year!

Martin’s Foods (Code # 06618): Martin’s stores are located in Culpeper, Ashland and Richmond. Your card must be registered each year. Please go to

Good Search: This is an internet search engine powered by Yahoo that allows you to designate a penny per search to FCS. It costs you nothing, but FCS benefits for each search you do. Go to  and designate FCS (listed as FCS, not Fredericksburg Christian School). You can bookmark it or make it your homepage. Sign up for emails for additional deals and discounts.

BoxTops are collected all year long, but please be aware of expiration date. We also collect Campbell’s labels, printer cartridges, and old cell phones, all of which can be turned in at any campus office. If you have any questions, please call the Development Office at 540-373-5355.

Federal Employees (Combined Federal Campaign CFC # 71351): FCS participates in the National Capital area and Potomac Region Campaigns. New this year: Universal Giving allows any federal employee to designate FCS, even if they live outside our area.

NSWC Federal Credit Union: All students, parents and staff of Fredericksburg Christian School are eligible for membership with NSWC FCU. For more information please visit their website at or call Stephanie Lyles, Business Development Officer at 540-361-2212.

An Important Note About the Homework App

Students using the Homework app on their iPads will want to make sure automatic updates are turned off. To turn off automatic updates on the iPad, follow these steps:

  1. Go to settings
  2. Click "iTunes and app store"
  3. Turn all of the automatic downloads off

Teachers have reviewed this process with students in class as well.

Dismissal Reminder

Just a reminder: all students not attending practices should be picked up from the Upper School no later than 3:45 p.m. on regular school days. Thank you so much for your cooperation.

A Message From Our Superintendent

In addition to the high priorities of academic development and spiritual growth at FCS, we are constantly vigilant regarding the safety and security of your children. We continue to improve our security monitoring and emergency response standards, and we are always eager to hear any concerns or suggestions from our school families. I'm writing today just to remind you of some of the procedures we have in place in the event of an emergency at or around your child's campus.

In the event of a lockdown, evacuation, extreme weather, a regional event or emergency, or other unusual activity on or around a campus, we will notify our school families as soon as possible and practical. Our primary methods of notification are Honeywell alerts, email, the FCS website, Facebook, and Twitter.

Parents are certainly welcome to pick up their students (or give permission for student drivers to leave) whenever they feel safety dictates. In the unlikely event that circumstances prevent parents from picking up their children (e.g. an incident near your location or restrictions put in place by local authorities), please know that we will keep your child safely at school with teachers and administrators for as long as it takes for you to get to the campus (even if it means late into the night).

We praise God for His provision of 35 years of safety on all of our campuses, but we recognize the need to be wise and proactive as we consider the times in which we live and as we consider the great privilege we have in caring for your precious children. Thank you for allowing us to help you train and protect your children, and as always, please do not hesitate to contact me or your campus principal if you have any questions or suggestions.

Parking Lot Reminder

Just a reminder that all numbered spaces in the parking lot are reserved. Please do not block the spaces, especially during morning arrival when the parking lot is especially congested. Parents visiting the school or dropping off items should park in the spaces marked "Visitor" directly in front of the school building. Students must have a Vehicle Registration form on file in the office to park on campus and are only permitted to park in their assigned spot.

Notes For Early Dismissal

Please don't forget to send a note or email to Mrs. Corbeau if you would like to give your student permission to sign out early on a regular basis. The note must include the student's name, days/times he or she is permitted to leave early, the effective dates, and a parent signature.

Please note: students who sign out without a note or email on file will be marked UA.

Please be sure to notify Mrs. Corbeau if your child will be late, absent, or leaving early. You may either email her at, send in a note, or call the Upper School office (540) 371-3852.

Be Sure to Check Out Our Guidance Page

Be sure to check out the Guidance page for information regarding upcoming testing and test preparation, scholarship information, and other information you need as you help your student plan for college. Parents of seniors will want to be sure to click on the Senior's College Planning Checklist, and Mrs. Thomas also recently added links to two scholarship search sites. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Thomas.

Arrival & Dismissal Information-Updated

Arrival: Drop off begins at 7:30 a.m. Please plan to arrive no later than 7:55 a.m. to give your student ample time to make it to homeroom by 8:00 a.m. During arrival, please pull along the front curb in a single lane, and follow the direction of the staff members on duty. If you have lots of items to unload, please park so that we can keep the arrival line moving.

Dismissal: Car riders and drivers are dismissed at 2:48 p.m. (except on Chapel, Early Dismissal, and Delayed Opening days). Please plan to arrive no earlier than 2:45 p.m. to minimize congestion in the parking lot. Please follow the directions of the staff members directing traffic, and start a double line at the crosswalk. The double lines will feed into a single line along the front curb. Please ask your children to be on the lookout for your vehicle. It may also be helpful to tell your children approximately what time you will arrive. Keep in mind that dismissal lines usually thin out by 3:15 p.m. If your schedule allows, you may want to plan on arriving around that time.

A few reminders:

  • Please be sure to keep the crosswalk clear at all times (during arrival/dismissal and throughout the school day).
  • Please help us model good safety habits by always using the crosswalk to approach the building on foot.
  • Please refrain from using any mobile devices while in the arrival/dismissal lines.
  • Please do not park along the front curb at any time. The four spaces on either side of the handicap parking spaces are designated visitor parking spaces.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work together over the next few days to fine tune the arrival and dismissal routine.
